True to its motto “Only the best for water”, Stadtentwässerung Reutlingen (SER) strives to operate its facilities using the latest technology in a sustainable, environmentally friendly and economical manner. For this reason, a new flow measurement system has now been installed at the rainwater overflow basin at Willy-Brandt-Platz, which ensures greater measurement and control accuracy.
The LDM measuring device with a nominal diameter of 400mm records the flow rate precisely and reliably from a fill level of 26.1mm. A PNA control flap uses the high-precision flow values to control the discharge. This reacts very quickly to changes in flow and maintains the programmed control value with minimal deviation and delay time.
The stormwater overflow tank at Willy-Brandt-Platz was connected to the process control system of the Reutlingen municipal drainage system via DSL Internet and now functions as part of the entire network. Using state-of-the-art control technology, the wastewater in the basin is monitored and fed to the sewage treatment plant in a targeted manner. This conserves natural resources.
Background: Stormwater overflow basins are not used for flood protection, as is often assumed, but for environmental protection. They protect rivers and streams and the animals and plants that live there from polluted water. This preserves valuable habitats and creates recreational areas for the citizens of Reutlingen.
Normally, a rainwater overflow basin is empty. During heavy rainfall events, the sewer system can no longer absorb the large quantities of rainwater. The sewage treatment plant would then also be overloaded. In this case, the stormwater overflow tank fills up. The dirt that has accumulated in the sewer is then trapped in the rainwater overflow basin. When the stormwater overflow tank is full, the water from the sewer can therefore be discharged into the nearest stream or river without any risk to the environment. Once the rain has stopped, the basin is slowly emptied back into the sewer and the water is treated as usual in the sewage treatment plant.
